Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) : Introduction

Introduction

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) has been very universally misunderstood and misinterpreted. One of the reasons is that the model for it was from an ancient Greek myth of a young man called Narcissus, who was looking at his reflections in the water till he died of doing this, and Narcissus' this act is depicted in paintings of highly-esteemed artists such as Caravaggio and Salvador Dali. It is widely misunderstood that narcissists are too much in love with themselves. But, such kind of misunderstanding simply be rejected.

In reality the narcissists do not love anyone & they don't have any feelings or sympathy for them & others either. They have a problem with their realization of their inner self, and cannot feel the love or compassion. So, they really don't have existence of their own it is the people around us that make them feel like Kings. They treat themselves and others very badly and they don't have any pity for people's pains or sufferings.

Since, narcissists cannot perceive by their own, they perceive the world by seeing people around them and their reactions, and act accordingly. Their acts and perception depends upon the people around them, more you feed them more they become hunger.

Narcissism is present in everybody but varies in degree. As we might have read it that, "An excess of everything is bad" same-thing, applies in the case of narcissism as well. While self-love is good form of appreciating oneself but when it becomes abundant in you, then it really becomes harmful.

Narcissists constantly crave for admiration and sympathy from others. The attention is what, that everybody wants. We post our pictures, videos and share candid moments on Social media platforms to gain popularity and to get appreciation from others. Humans are social animals and all these things like: Money, prestige, admiration and appreciation mean a lot for them.

People with Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) often directly or indirectly exploit people around them with their acts, for the pursuit of attention, admiration, sympathy and affection. The narcissists lack empathy & can't feel others. They cannot feel people’s emotions effectively & cannot feel pity for their sufferings.

My Opinion
I partially agree with the psychiatry's views. The sufficient research and findings is needed to study the NPD properly. The improper information and lack of awareness about the narcissistic personality disorder among the people and widespread myth create a huge problem in decoding and knowing the NPD properly.

Though, the NPD persons are misanthrope and love to exploit & wreak havoc to the people. But, we should understand that they are the products of our own society and the pain that they felt in their childhood or the trauma that they gone through.

There is a need for proper awareness among the people. We should understand, the only thing that a narcissist want is admiration, appreciation and sympathy. They will try directly or indirectly to break you emotionally and it is YOU, who will decide whether you want to become his supply or go No contact for ever.

Although, there is no proper cure for the NPD but, it can be treated by a professional like psychiatry and psychoanalyst with proper counseling and medication.
